Run Windows On Iphone

Windows will run soon on the iPhone using Citrix Receiver, a remote screen software that connects to a PC and gives you the illusion you are running Microsoft's operating systems, including copy and paste functionality.

Why is this useful? It will give you the ability to run full Windows apps in your iPhone over the network. According to Citrix, you will have full Windows capability, including cut and paste inside Windows. And while this is not the first remote screen application available for the iPhone, it is the first one which is actually supported by a big company, which will make corporations happy.

Transparent TFT for Temporary Tattoos

USC researchers have demonstrated a low-temperature (and therefore relatively inexpensive, apparently) process for printing transparent TFTs on flexible material able to bend up to 120 degrees which allows for embedding LED to build see-through displays. The prototype disc shown above is 5 inches in diameter and contains around 20,000 nanotube transistors. The researchers suggest the technology could be used for e-paper, smart tags, and artificial skin, as well as an affordable heads-up display that could be put into car windshields. Our suggestion? Couple it with transparent playing cards for the ultimate poker-cheating experience.

Braille Polaroid Camera Concept

If you have ever lost use of a part of your body then you will be aware of the frustration it can cause. For some, this luxury of everything working never comes back. For the blind they do not have the ability to see which is another luxury. For this reason a cool Braille Polaroid Camera has been designed although unfortunately it seems like it’s still a concept at the moment.

This is simply an amazing idea where you can capture images with a camera and then have a printer instantly print out the image… but in Braille so that those who struggle to see can experience what you are seeing also.

The heightened sense of touch developed by blind people has been harnessed for the Braille Polaroid Camera. Although it has been designed to resemble most other cameras, the Braille Polaroid Camera contains a built-in Braille printer, which immediately prints the shot after the user presses the shot button.

The camera was designed by Son Seunghee, Lee Sukyung and Kim Hyunsoo and hopefully will be built in to a working product that can be sold.

Denser Chips & Disks With The Help Of Flying plasmonic lens system

Last we heard, IBM was busy extending optical lithography down to 30-nanometers in order to keep Moore's Law intact, and some two years later, the process is still being honed by engineers at the University of California, Berkeley. Reportedly, gurus there with IQs far greater than ours have developed a new patterning technique (plasmonic nanolithography) that could make "current microprocessors more than 10 times smaller, but far more powerful." Additionally, professor Xiang Zhang asserts that this same technology could eventually "lead to ultra-high density disks that could hold 10 to 100 times more data than disks today." The secret to the madness is a flying plasmonic head, which is compared to the arm and stylus of an LP turntable; the setup enables researchers to "create line patterns only 80-nanometers wide at speeds up to 12-meters per second, with the potential for higher resolution detail in the near future." In layman's terms? That CPU you purchased last month will, in fact, be old hat in due time.

Samsung Announced Pixon M8800

Samsung have announced that their Pixon M8800 is due out this month. The phone has an 8 megapixel camera to join the likes of LG and Sony Ericsson. Another feature it boasts is a touch-screen accelerator. Lets take a look at what all that means and what else it can do.

The Pixon M8800 is a very slim phone at just 15.5mm and the camera features that it packs in are just right for you not to need another separate camera in your pocket. The camera has autofocus, a flash, face/smile/blink detection, panoramic shooting, stabilisation making it on par with a similar spec point and shoot. The built in Assisted GPS on the phone also allows you to geo-tag your pictures so you know exactly where each shot was taken. When viewing images you can rotate the phone and the built in accelerometer rotates the screen to suit.

The touch-screen utilises Samsung’s TouchWiz operating system. The screen measures a fairly large 3.2 inches and is capable of displaying 16 million colours. Full HD viewing is supported which I assume is through the TV-Out port. Unfortunately there is no wi-fi, but you do get a 3G handset with 7.2Mbps HSDPA. Mobile phone networks are recently allowing for more data so wi-fi would be nice, but is not as essential as it was a year ago.

The phone has SRS Virtual Surround sound that is normally found in Samsung’s television sets. DivX support is provided so you watch movies on the go. A TV-Out port can also be found so you can hook it directly up to a TV.

Overall it looks like another great phone which supports a fantastic camera and multi media features.

Asus Announces Eee PC With 160GB

Asus recently announced their 3.75G laptop which has built in 3G capabilities making it possible to go online pretty much anywhere. They have now announced another upgrade to their 900 series Eee which puts a massive 160Gb hard drive inside it.

The only problem now is choosing between better connectivity or more hard drive space. From my point of view I could live with the lower storage capacity if I could have the better connectivity that the 3.75G model offers.

The new Asus Eee PC is named the 900HA and is powered by an Intel Atom N270 processor. It has 3 USB 2.0 ports and a built in 1.3 megapixel camera.

The display is at the standard 8.9 inches for the 900 series which runs at a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. On the connectivity side there is Wi-fi built in as well as a LAN port for those who prefer wired connections. Also there is support for both MMC and SD cards allowing you to more easily transfer your digital photos to the Eee PC.

The price of this little laptop is surprisingly cheap at $350 and for this price you also get Windows XP installed.

I am still in favour of the 3.75G model though as I easily prefer better web connectivity to hard drive space. If only they could create an Asus Eee PC 901HA so we could have both the extreme amount of storage space and tons of connectivity. Oh well… maybe the next announcement will tell us just that.

Touch UI: BlackBerry Storm's

We've seen some of the BlackBerry Storm's older UI in blurry shots and videos, but it's obviously gotten a recent facelift—especially the keyboard, which used to look absolutely gross. Storm Reviews has a load of pics of the freshest UI off of Vodaphone's version, and it looks pretty good, though I find the italics for the keyboard font to be oddly annoying.

Samsung Omnia i900 Coming Soon

The Omnia is the latest challenge for the iPhone. It is built by Samsung and is also known as the Samsung i900. Lets take a look at what it does.

The Samsung Omnia is an advanced mobile phone which has a ton of features packed in. It measures just 12.5mm in depth and has a large touch-screen on the front of the device which has a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels (3.2 inches in size). This allows for portrait or landscape viewing of images, movies, websites and other applications which benefit from a large screen. The exterior of the phone is a sleek black gloss in finish making the mixture of large screen and phone look cool to carry around.

The web browser is powered by Opera 9.5 which makes browsing a lot easier due to the functions built in unlike Windows Mobile which never seem to make IE good enough to want to use over a long period of time. However, the phone is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 allowing you to make use of the more common applications such as Word, Excel and other various MS Office applications.

On the connectivity and functions side it has A-GPS for satellite navigation. ‘A’ means assisted which makes use of either 3G or a wireless connection to help speed up that first fix time when you switch it on. Navigation software is not included, but this does mean that you can install your favourite application, or use a free one such as Google Maps which works very well as a mapping piece of software. Applications built in include Google Search and GMail response allowing for you to check emails on the go from an application rather then a web page.

Memory wise there is a huge 16GB place to store all your music, videos etc… which is one of the larger memory capacities I have seen on a mobile phone. The Omnia does have a 5 mega pixel camera allowing it to take up a fair few meg per picture. If you do want more variety of music then attach the headphones and tune in to your favourite radio station as this phone can also pick up radio signals making it feature packed.

It seems like Samsung have got it right with the Omnia i900. It has every thing that a fully fledged user might want from a standard phone to a web browser and on to a satellite navigation device. It doesn’t have a keyboard, but it does have a large touch screen which when rotated side ways you can pop up a full QWERTY keyboard on to the screen much like the iPhone has. To help the phone feel more like a regular keyboard the phone gives feedback for every key pressed in the form of vibration helping you to type more comfortably.

By having all the connectivity built in that you could dream of, you should never have a problem getting some kind of signal weather it be using data at speeds of 7.2Mbps, or wifi at what ever speed available there. You should never be left with out a connection to the web and outside world. With the mixture of GPS and Google Search you also get location based searching. Stand in your current spot and search for a restaurant and you will see in the search results the closest restaurants to you with the phone numbers also.

I have to say that the i900 is one serious phone and well worth looking in to as an alternative to the Apple iPhone.

Nippon Revealed Pocket Sized Mini Projector

Nippon Signal has revealed its new entrant into the color projector size war, showing off a SVGA 800 x 600 resolution color projector that's roughly the size of a cigarette case at a recent micromachines exhibition. The prototype, which measures a tiny 90 x 55 x 20mm, uses a MEMS scanner to project images, rather than the more traditional LED.

The projector reaches its small size in part by using proprietary optical parts, including a prism lens exclusively made for it. Nippon Signal also swapped a diode pumping solid state (DPSS) laser for a much tinier semiconductor laser to display greens, reduced the dimensions of the MEMS scanner and optimized the layout to fit within its lilliputian confines. As you can see, the image quality is passable—not even close to movie theater quality, but colors are bright and the resolution is good enough for, say, an impromptu Power Point presentation.

No word on when this will be available to the masses, but Nippon Signal says it plans on commercializing the prototype soon.

Fingernail Display Watch

A number of fancy watches have been displayed on the pages of Gadget Guruz. Usually they are binary type watches from Tokyo Flash, or ultra expensive watches. This latest watch is a concept idea that embeds on your fingernail. The TX54 is translucent and sits on the surface of your fingernail and displays the time in a range of 3 or 4 colours. The time is only displayed when the device is active and at all other times the watch blends right in to your fingernail so it appears to not even be there. At the edge of the nail can be found a thumb control allowing you to switch between modes on the watch. Although the features of this watch are basic in that it does time and date only, I think it would be cool to have an actual OLED type display there so you can flick through thumbnail’s of images literally on your thumbnail.

The TX54 was designed for a competition which Timex and Core77 are running. The competition commemorates 150 years of timex watches.

PolyFuel Cell Power For Laptops

Fuel Cell technology is fascinating as it has potential to provide around 10 times more power than a Lithium Ion battery. Not only can it power it for a fair few hours, the fuel can also be topped up and power to the laptop be supplied on demand. This prevents the need of several hours of charging before a long journey.

PolyFuel are a company based in California who have created a new prototype which converts methanol fuel to electricity. The fuel cell is about the size of a deck of cards and can supply power to a trial Lenovo T40 ThinkPad. Fuel Cell technology is one thing that I cannot wait to see built standard in to laptops. Hopefully PolyFuel have taken it one step closer.

Samasung TL8: With Dual Analog Gauges

The TL9 is a camera built by Samsung which also is capable of MP3 playback and PMP functionality. The most unique feature of this camera has to be the dual analog gauges which represent battery life and memory usage. The analog features add a different touch to this camera and sets it aside from other cameras a little. Analog gauges are not ground breaking technology, but with them being visible all the time it’s easy to see what your camera has left in it.

The camera has a 10 megapixel CCD, a 5 x optical zoom lens and Dual Image Stabilization. The camera achieves stable images by using two advanced methods. The first is named OIS meaning “optical image stabilization” and DIS meaning “digital image stabilization”. Mixed together a clean image can be captured each time.

The screen, which can also display movies, measures 2.7 inch allowing for clear viewing of either a picture being taken or the movies you are watching. One last really funky feature I want to mention is the Smile Shot feature which scans for smiles on peoples faces. It will not take the picture till everyone’s teeth are shining brightly! Also blink protection which doesn’t take a picture if someone is blinking can be found in this camera.

Water-Powered Bedol Wall Wave Clock

If you're all about the environment, you probably have a hybrid car, monitor your power use, and recycle your detritus. But if you still have a power-guzzling alarm clock that plugs into the wall, for shame, you glutton! Fear not, though -- the eco-friendly, water-powered Bedol Wall Wave Clock is here to save the day. Powered by electrodes immersed in water that extract energy from compound particles, this thirsty clock won't be available until Augst 15, 2008.

Disposable Cellphone

BIC are well known for their disposable type products such as pens and razors. They are now venturing in to another arena by creating a disposable mobile phone. BIC have teamed up with Orange in France to launch the disposable phone which will come with 1 hour of free calls which can be topped up if needed by purchasing Mobicarte pre-pay airtime cards. The phone has no real advanced features and simply acts as a phone and text messaging device which can be picked up for about €49 in France when it is launched on 7th August.

Activation of the phone built by Alcatel is simple as it has the SIM card already inserted. The phone number is also provided in the box should you wish to hand it out to anyone.

One thing I hope they do get right is that if the phone is intended to be chucked away after use, that it goes to someone or some country that could benefit. For me, I would rather pay a few pounds more and get a phone I intend to keep. For some reason I just have a vision of a bathroom cabinet full of disposable orange mobile phones along size the BIC razors.

Inside Iphone 3G

Over in Auckland the ifixit team were getting their hands on the new iPhone 3G. They would be one of the first in the world due to the timezone of Auckland, to get their hands on this phone. Right after the launch they decided it was time to pull the thing apart.

The whole process starts with the removal of the SIM card which the iPhone comes with a special paper clip type SIM removal tool. Inside they found a number of changes compared to last years iPhone. These changes include a battery that’s not soldered to the iPhone, a glass screen that can be removed (with a number of screws) rather then peeling off the glue which made replacements more expensive. This is of course, good news for those of you who drop your iPhones and smash the screens. No GPS chip has been found as yet, although ifixit did comment that it would probably be bundled in elsewhere with another chip somewhere. No doubt these finer details will be available soon.

A new concept idea has recently been unveiled which shows a folding bike that can double up as a back pack. The flimsy looking bike weighs just 5.5 KG and is 60cm in length.

Not only does this bike/bag act as a back pack and bike, the whole thing can be used as a handcart too for carting around. Features on the bike are to include a headlight, back light and turning signals. For me, it just looks a tad too flimsy and I’d be worried about being knocked off in the wind.

The bike is just concept at the moment, so the 60cm in length and 5.5 kilos are more likely to be estimates of what they want to achieve with this. Would you take it out for a spin?

Pocket Shower

I can’t say I have ever thought about carrying a shower around in my pocket before, but I learned today that this is now possible with a Pocket Sized shower. What this little shower allows you to do is keep clean where ever you are. All you need is a tree or similar object to hang it from and your laughing.

The pocket shower comes in a small bag rolled up and once unrolled it can store 10 litres of water in there. 10 litres provides enough water for a 7 minute shower which for most people is adequate. If you are worried about the water being too cold then do not fear. The casing of the pocket shower is designed in such a way that it absorbs sun light and uses the heat generated to warm up the water above that chilling point. Although I doubt you will see a very hot shower with this, at least you can stay clean while out at a festival.
