Touch UI: BlackBerry Storm's

We've seen some of the BlackBerry Storm's older UI in blurry shots and videos, but it's obviously gotten a recent facelift—especially the keyboard, which used to look absolutely gross. Storm Reviews has a load of pics of the freshest UI off of Vodaphone's version, and it looks pretty good, though I find the italics for the keyboard font to be oddly annoying.

Samsung Omnia i900 Coming Soon

The Omnia is the latest challenge for the iPhone. It is built by Samsung and is also known as the Samsung i900. Lets take a look at what it does.

The Samsung Omnia is an advanced mobile phone which has a ton of features packed in. It measures just 12.5mm in depth and has a large touch-screen on the front of the device which has a resolution of 240 x 400 pixels (3.2 inches in size). This allows for portrait or landscape viewing of images, movies, websites and other applications which benefit from a large screen. The exterior of the phone is a sleek black gloss in finish making the mixture of large screen and phone look cool to carry around.

The web browser is powered by Opera 9.5 which makes browsing a lot easier due to the functions built in unlike Windows Mobile which never seem to make IE good enough to want to use over a long period of time. However, the phone is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 allowing you to make use of the more common applications such as Word, Excel and other various MS Office applications.

On the connectivity and functions side it has A-GPS for satellite navigation. ‘A’ means assisted which makes use of either 3G or a wireless connection to help speed up that first fix time when you switch it on. Navigation software is not included, but this does mean that you can install your favourite application, or use a free one such as Google Maps which works very well as a mapping piece of software. Applications built in include Google Search and GMail response allowing for you to check emails on the go from an application rather then a web page.

Memory wise there is a huge 16GB place to store all your music, videos etc… which is one of the larger memory capacities I have seen on a mobile phone. The Omnia does have a 5 mega pixel camera allowing it to take up a fair few meg per picture. If you do want more variety of music then attach the headphones and tune in to your favourite radio station as this phone can also pick up radio signals making it feature packed.

It seems like Samsung have got it right with the Omnia i900. It has every thing that a fully fledged user might want from a standard phone to a web browser and on to a satellite navigation device. It doesn’t have a keyboard, but it does have a large touch screen which when rotated side ways you can pop up a full QWERTY keyboard on to the screen much like the iPhone has. To help the phone feel more like a regular keyboard the phone gives feedback for every key pressed in the form of vibration helping you to type more comfortably.

By having all the connectivity built in that you could dream of, you should never have a problem getting some kind of signal weather it be using data at speeds of 7.2Mbps, or wifi at what ever speed available there. You should never be left with out a connection to the web and outside world. With the mixture of GPS and Google Search you also get location based searching. Stand in your current spot and search for a restaurant and you will see in the search results the closest restaurants to you with the phone numbers also.

I have to say that the i900 is one serious phone and well worth looking in to as an alternative to the Apple iPhone.

World's First Cellphone Having In-Built Projector

While we've been watching the development of pico-projectors with interest, Chinese company Cking has gone ahead and built what may be the first production phone with a projector built in.

From the photos of the phone at the Tianjin Mobile Phone exhibition you can see it's a chunky candybar with the pico-projector beneath a lens on the top end. Apparently it's a 640 x 480 resolution projector with manual focus, a picture size up to 30-inches and the battery can give it about two hours of projection time. The LED light source must generate a fair whack of heat, since the phone is punched full of holes at the projector end, presumably so that it doesn't collapse into a molten heap of parts.

Pretty interesting, but really, you've got to laugh at the phone's UI: looks like OS X, doesn't it? Though this looks like a real product, there's no info on whether we'll see it outside China's borders.

Finally iPhone 3G Announced- Special Report

After all the buzz and sizzle Apple finally introduces the new iPhone 3G. This phone is anticipated to revolutionize the telecom industry. It brings with it a faster 3G networking, in-built GPS capability for mobile services (expanded location) and iPhone 2.0 software that bundles up many applications at just half the price. Apple is celebrating the anniversary of the iPhone by bringing technology on the most advanced platform in the world.

Apple has been striving to make the iPhone available in more than 70 countries later this year, and this effort is clearly seen as Apple begins with the customer availability of the iPhone in 22 countries. Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US will be countries to grab this phone on July 11. The 8 GB version is available only in black color and the 16 GB one is available in both black and white colors.

“Just one year after launching the iPhone, we’re launching the new iPhone 3G that is twice as fast at half the price,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “ iPhone 3G supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync right out of the box, runs the incredible third party apps created with the iPhone SDK, and will be available in more than 70 countries around the world this year.”

The new 3G version offers faster access to the Internet and email with quad-band GSM and tri-band HSDPA for voice and data connectivity. The iPhone not only supports Wi-Fi, 3G and EDGE networks but also provides automatic switching between them and assures fastest possible download speeds. The multi-tasking feature allows simultaneous voice and data communications that enables you to browse the web, check emails as well as get map directions while on call.

The 3G iPhone 2.0 software offers iPhone SDK and key enterprise features like supporting Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, contact and calendar syncing, remote wipe, Multi-Touch user interface, accelerometer, animation technology and Cisco IPsec VPN allowing encrypted access to corporate networks.

The users of iPhone 3G are provided with App Store that offers native applications in categories like games, business, sports, reference and health. The App Store is available on WiFi and cellular networks and needs to be purchased and downloaded. It will be available in 62 countries at the launch.

With the new iPhone 3G you can mass move and delete multiple email messages, search for contacts, access a new scientific calculator, turn on parental control restrictions for specified content, real-time mapping, track your progress with GPS technology etc. The iPhone 3G offers talk time of 10 hours on 2G networks and 5 hours of talk time on 3G networks. It offers 5 to 6 hours of web browsing, 7 hours of video playback and 24 hours of audio playback.

The iPhone 3G’s new MobileMe Internet service pushes contacts, emails and calendars from an online “cloud” to iPhone, iPod touch, Macs and PCs. MobileMe pushes emails and messages instantly to iPhone thus eliminating the need to check email and wait for downloads. The changes made on one device are automatically updated on the other device. MobileMe Gallery enables you to directly share your snap with family and friends. The subscription based service MobileMe with 20 GB storage is available for $99 (US) per year.

Available at Apple and AT&T retail stores in the US from July 11, the 8 GB and 16 GB iPhone 3G models can be purchased at an unimaginable price of $199 and $299 respectively. A new two year contract with AT&T is required.

Qisda's Wimax/GSM/GPRS/EDGE Compitable Callphone

Qisda's recently showcased slider is still quite intriguing. The currently unnamed cellphone supports both 802.16e WiMAX as well as GSM / GPRS / EDGE networks, and just in case you're hankering for another way to get connected, there's a built-in WiFi module too. Reportedly, the smartphone is a test device used in the M-Taiwan initiative to promote WiMAX, and aside from handling voice calls via (almost) any flavor of wireless protocol, you'll also find Windows Mobile 6.1 running the show. Granted, this particular unit wasn't down with 3G, but a spokesperson was adamant that such a handset would be added to its portfolio eventually.

3G iPhone Hit Japan Through Softbank

9th June, the expected launch date of the Apple 3G iPhone, is just few days away. We are aware of the fact that many people are waiting for the release and at the same they are eager to know which network operator will roll out the next-generation iPhone!

Softbank, one of the leading network carriers in Japan, has announced that they have signed an agreement with Apple to sell the UMTS 3G iPhone in the country. The handset will release by end of this year. In the Japanese market, all the network carriers utilize 3G technology (WCDMA and faster) for calling purposes and also for data.

However, following the old strategy of not disclosing the launch details, Softbank maintained its mum when asked about the other information. No idea whether the Softbank deal is an exclusive one or Apple is looking for other operators to make the 3G iPhone available.

Last year, Apple was reportedly considering NTT DoCoMo to launch the iPhone in Japan. We hope talks are still going on so that the country can look forward to at least two carriers to roll out the revolutionary handset.

More news on the Apple iPhone to roll out soon. Stay tuned to the website.

10 Futuristic Concept Phones Designs

1 . Nokia 888 Communicator

Nokia definitely has the most interesting concept phones. Nokia 888 Communicator is a striking futuristic concept phone. The phone, which uses liquid batteries, speech recognition, flexible touchscreen and touch-sensitive body cover,is designed by Tamer Nakisci and won the Nokia Design Award

2 . Nokia Aeon

Nokia Aeon was presented by Nokia on their website in the Research & Development section. What is so great about this phone is that it looks like it will actually go into production next February. Of course, its just a rumor, but still, makes us hope to actually see it someday in the GSM shop. All we know about it for now is that its a touchscreen phone and it looks fantastic.

3 . Sky "Sleak n Slim"

"Sleek & Slim" from SKY is another concept based on touchscreen technology. The phone has a discretely glowing touchpad, hideaway keys and generally utterly-fashionable minimalist design.

4 . Benq-Siemes "Snaked"

Benq designers thought of women too and presented Snaked. This is a "reptile" looking phone, creepy somehow, but still is very cool. The Snaked is a fashion phone for sport loving women, because it also has body monitoring sensors to help the ladies keep those fine shapes.

5 . What You See is What You Get Concept
One thing is for sure about this concept phoneĆ¢€¦they could've named it shorter. Designed by Pei-Hua Hang, the phone's name comes from the fact that this concept no longer uses an LCD as viewfinder for the digital camera, instead it uses a transparent frame. And of course, interaction is made through a touchscreen

6 . Retroxis By Dark Label

If most phones presented here will never be sold in store for sure, the Retroxis concept phone from Dark Label looks kinda human, and makes us hope we'll be able to get one of these one day. Designed by Lim Sze Tat the phone is encased in high polished polycarbonate renowned for its lightweight and toughness and has an invisible OLED display that silently hides away when inactive.

7 . Benq-Siemens "The Blackbox"

lack Box designed by Benq-Siemens uses a touch screen as its keypad and, depending on the functions you are using, the touch screen changes the control layout immediately.

8 . NEC Tag

Somehow similar to the Snaked concept, the NEC Tag is a flexible phone concept that can be , for example, hung from a belt or wrapped around the user's arm. Interesting is that the phone has shape-memorizing material and sensors that allows the phone to change its shape according to the mode.

9 . TripleWatch

Though the idea of a cellphone watch is not so new, the TripleWatch designed by Manon Maneenawa has an interesting triple flip technique that allows the user to transform the watch into a normal cellphone. When used as a wrist watch, the phone has a speaker button that allows the user to answer the phone and hang up while driving.

10 . Asus Aura

Mototrola Concept Phone With 2 Cameras

What better thing to bring you on a Sunday afternoon than a concept cellphone that looks like it was dreamed-up on a lazy Sunday afternoon: a cellphone with two cameras. No, not your usual one on the front/one on the back. Looking like Wall-e has crashed through your phone, this one has two on the back, with two flashes. The design page has the word "STEREO" writ in letters large under the image, so we're going to guess the twin cams are for making stereo images. You know, that faux-3D effect that is surprisingly cool. Shame the rest of Lysandre Follet's phone design is so meh.

Concept Phone: Nokia Reseach Center & Cambridge Univ. Develops "Morph"

Nokia Research Center (NRC) and the University of Cambridge (UK) has announced the development of Morph, a concept mobile phone. What is innovative about the phone is that it is flexible and bendable.

Nokia says that the new phone is an example of how future mobile devices might be stretchable and flexible, allowing the user to transform their mobile device into radically different shapes. Further, Morph features flexible materials, transparent electronics and self-cleaning surfaces.

Dr. Bob Iannucci, Chief Technology Officer, Nokia, stated, “Nokia Research Center is looking at ways to reinvent the form and function of mobile devices; the Morph concept shows what might be possible”.

“We hope that this combination of art and science will showcase the potential of nanoscience to a wider audience. The research we are carrying out is fundamental to this as we seek a safe and controlled way to develop and use new materials,”commented Dr. Tapani Ryhanen, Head of the NRC Cambridge UK laboratory, Nokia

Morph is a good example of usage of nanotechnology which might lead to offer high-end mobile phones integrate few elements of the concept phone. Also Nokia hopes that the development of Morph will lead to low-cost devices with more functionality and smaller sizes.

Morph will be exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City from February 24 to May 12, as part of the “Design and the Elastic Mind” exhibition.

PDA/Tablet Concept for Old Peoples

Hey, old people have technological needs too. Or so this concept would have us believe. The idea behind this tablet/pda-ish device is that it uses RFID tracking technology toremind the elderly when to take their meds, when food in the refrigerator goes bad, and what to get at the store to meet nutritional requirements. But if my grandparents' foray into technology is any indication, this device would do nothing but baffle the elderly mind.

Ultra Tough Woongjin PDA with GPS Phone

Woongjin, a company I am not familiar with, have created an ultra-slim mobile phone which has GPS navigation built in to it. Not many details are available yet, but from what we have heard the phone is toughened, waterproof and perfect for those who love outdoor activities. It is built to survive a fall and vibrations which makes it an ideal phone for the outdoors type person. From the outside it looks like a fairly standard piece of kit, but what is noticeable is the screen which seems to be of a PDA size. Under the screen is a standard keypad with directional keys, menu keys and call, hangup buttons. For some reason, a 2D bar code scanner can also be attached although I am unsure what that is needed for.

The new Nokia N78 candybar cellphone comes absolutely loaded: HSPDA 3G support, Wi-Fi connectivity, FM music transmitter and integrated Assisted GPS. The later has obligatory Nokia Maps support and automatic geotagging of photos taken by its 3.2-megapixel sensor with Carl Zeiss optics. Unlike the previous N73, the
$507 (350 euros) pianoblacktabulous N78 gets rid of real keys in favor of touch surfaces,

Samsung Soul sleeky Touchpad Display

Samsung's Ultra Edition range will get a revamp with their new Soul, a 7.2Mbps HSDPA cellphone which, at only 12.9mm thick, it comes with auto focus 5MP camera, 2.2" 320 x 240 pixel full-color display, SD slot and a touchpad display system that will morph the user interface, changing icons according to the application you are using. For example, in music mode playback controls will appear, but whilst sending an SMS these will be replaced with editing functions.

Dell's building an Android phone to be unveiled next month?

Stick this one firmly in the rumor category, since all the verbiage that's been thrown around about this story still traces back to one single source: a slightly ill-informed article done up in MarketingWeek in the UK. The article cites unspecified "senior industry sources," and goes on about how this is Dell and Google working closely together on what is more or less the "Gphone." Since we have no reason to believe Google is going to jeopardize its Android OS by getting extra-friendly with one specific manufacturer, the primary weight we can give to this rumor is that fact that Dell picked up a former Motorola executive, Ron Garriques, to run its Global Consumer Group early last year. Other rumors have cropped up over the years about Dell moving in this direction, so it certainly wouldn't signal the apocalypse if a Dell-branded Android phone does show up at this rumored unveiling at 3GSM, but giving how early on Android is at the moment, we'll believe it when we see it.

Philips READIUS Materializes With Fold-Away Screen

The Philips READIUS prototype that we showed you over a year ago, is finally materializing as an actual consumer product, but not just as an e-reader but a mobile phone. The READIUS has a slightly different design than the prototype, with a 5-inch flexible display that actually rolls up around the phone, allowing it to be stored when not in use. The phone is manufactured under Polymer Vision which is partly owned by Philips. The Dutch company has yet to release complete specs for the phone, but the READIUS is show as having a large display and great battery life.

The LG Prada is a great looking phone which will be made available in silver. It is due out later this month across a number of countries in Europe and will now feature a full QWERTY keyboard on screen rather then just the T9 key pad input.

The cellphone has a 3.2-inch 262,000 color touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera and supports HSDPA at 3.6Mbps. No release date yet for the US, but it looks like it will reach Europe first for a whooping $734 without contract.

FCC Leaks Details on the Motorola ROKR E8

The FCC has just leaked details on the heretofore unannounced Motorola ROKR E8. The candybar phone has an illuminated touch keypad that disappears when not in use, making the thing look totally buttonless save the control wheel up top. It's got haptic feedback of some kind, and it also has "a landscape display, micro-USB port, sliding key lock switch, camera, stereo Bluetooth, EDGE data and a microSD memory card slot located under the battery cover." Good times.
